Week 10 Chemistry

water molecule

Now that you started creating molecule models with the element balls and connecting plastic pieces, let’s look at balancing chemical equations.  Remember when we combined vinegar and baking soda?  The equation is vinegar + baking soda YIELDS water + carbon dioxide.  The arrow in the equation mean yields.  Here it is written as a chemical chemical equation.  Copy this in your notebook.  The materials on the LEFT side of the yield sign are called the REACTANTS since they are reacting with each other.  The materials on the RIGHT side of the yield sign are called PRODUCTS since that’s what the reaction produces.  The law of conservation of matter and energy states that matter can neither be created nor destroyed…it can only change from one form to another.  As a result, chemical equations must be balanced when written out.  Watch this video about balancing chemical equations.

Now read pages 62, starting with Naming Simple Compounds, to page 76.  Take notes…be sure to write down the bolded vocabulary terms. Do the following in your notebooks:
p. 75  Carefully read Example 2.12
p. 76  Do Exercise 2.13
p. 81 Do the following problems:  2.63, 2.64, 2.65, 2.66, 2.67, 2.69, 2.71, 2.73, 2.91

We will do more with balancing equations together in class next week.

Take this Chemistry Quiz…record your score for EACH question.

Watch this Crosscutting Concept video on Energy & Matter.  Be sure to take notes.
